For art-school applications, a portfolio brings past work together to show technical ability, artistic voice, and creative thinking. It should reveal what a student has learned and made so far—and where they want to grow next.

What is a portfolio?

Most studio-art and design disciplines—including fine art, graphic design, visual communication, interior design, and fashion design—require a portfolio. Only a small number of theory-led programmes do not.

Which programmes require one?

A strong portfolio takes time. Students applying to U.S. graduate programmes can begin exploring concepts in their second or third year, then refine and expand the work in their final year. Keep each school’s calendar in view: programmes beginning in September commonly accept applications from the previous November through February.
